The end of July is the anniversary of Bach's death in 1750

In his lifetime (65 years), Bach composed an incredible 1128 pieces of music. Among these were many organ works. Here are two of the best known performed by Dr Steven Nisbet.

The music is all by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). He was partly responsible for a resurgence in interest in the music of JS Bach (1685-1750). Thanks, Felix.

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy[n 1] (3 February 1809 – 4 November 1847), born and widely known as Felix Mendelssohn,[n 2] was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn's compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music, organ music and chamber music. His best-known works include the overture and incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, the oratorio St. Paul, the oratorio Elijah, the overture The Hebrides, the mature Violin Concerto and the String Octet. The melody for the Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is also his. Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words are his most famous solo piano compositions.

Music

While I have been staying at home during the period of social restrictions associated with the COVID-19 crisis, I have been writing music for the on-line presentations by St Andrew’s Uniting Church, Brisbane. As the crisis was in full swing before, during and after Easter, I wrote music on the themes of Passiontide and Easter.

There are six pieces of music altogether and they were originally written for voices and organ. Since then I have adapted them as stand-alone Hymn Preludes for Organ.
Excerpts from the Hymn Preludes are attached. The list of hymns I arranged is as follows:

Ride on, ride on in majesty
When I survey the wondrous cross
Christ the Lord is risen today
The day of resurrection
Love is come again
Crown him with many crowns
